Some Interesting Facts from
The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio
Pennsylvania Railroad and Its Work Practices
In the 1870s, engineers and firemen on the Pennsyvlania Railroad were sometimes forced to pay for maintenance on their locomotive out of their own pocket. They earned nothing during the sometimes lengthy time it took to complete them. When operating their locomotives, they worked about 12 hours each day, but any labor they did when the train wasn’t running went unpaid. This fact came from The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio by this website's creator, Mark Strecker. You can buy it at Amazon or from the History Press.
