Some Interesting Facts from
The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio
In 1874, the Pennsylvania Railroad had the largest system in the nation, and it used it size to bully others. Worried that the upstart Cleveland-based company Standard Oil had hold such a firm hold on the refined oil industry it could threaten to pull freight from the road and hurt it, the company encouraged its sister company, Empire Transportation, to get into the refining business. This plan didn’t go well for the PRR. This fact came from The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio by this website's creator, Mark Strecker. You can buy it at Amazon or from the History Press.
