No Sympathy for Tramps
During the economic depression of the 1870s, between 1.5 to 2 million men took to the road looking for work. Called “tramps,” an 1876 New York Times satirical article “reported” that there were heading to Cleveland for a convention at which where they would demand “fewer large dog-houses” and call for “the formation of a union and the adoption of a scale of diet. If a skilled tramp is to flourish and grow fat, he must crush out the rivalry of mean-spirited tramps who accept cheap and plain food.” This fact came from The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio by this website's creator, Mark Strecker.
