No Charity for the Needy
Those attending the Conference of Charities in Saratoga Springs, New York, in September 1877 had little charity in their hearts. One topic discussed was the issue of the massive number of so-called tramps wandering from place to place. (They were looking for work.) About them, attendee Reverend Edward E. Hale suggested “that we create this army of tramps by the lavishness with which we feed them; that so long as a nation gave away food as readily as it gave air or water, there would be lazy dogs ready to take it on as easy terms.” This fact came from The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio by this website's creator, Mark Strecker.
