Strikers Use the Railroad Against Itself
During the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, strikers on the Lake Shore & Southern Michigan Railroad took one of the company’s trains from Collinwood, Ohio, to Toledo where they convinced their fellow workers to strike. Although the strikers wanted their Toledo brethren to keep things peaceful, things nonetheless got out of hand. A mob invaded and vandalized the Board of Trade’s building, forcing the mayor to shut down the city’s saloons and prompting and citizen’s vigilance committee to form.
