The Disaster at Cross Creek
A terrible accident occurred near Mingo Junction, Ohio, on August 6, 1878. A freight and passenger train crashed head on, knocking cars and locomotives off the tracks and down a steep embankment along Cross Creek. Both trains belonged to the Panhandle Railroad, a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania. The passenger train had airbrakes. The freight train didn’t. Had it, casualties might have been fewer. This fact came from The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio by this website's creator, Mark Strecker. You can buy it at Amazon or from the History Press.
