The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio
Multiple Railroads Go Bankrupt
The Panic of 1873 caused many of America’s railroads to go bankrupt in 1875. One of these was the Toledo, Wabash & Western Railroad, which was first proposed at an 1852 meeting in Toledo, Ohio. Unable to pay its bills, a judge ordered the sale of all its equipment and assets to pay its debts. Out of this chaos emerged the Wabash Railroad, which later became part of what is today Norfolk Southern. This fact came from The Great Railroad Strike in Ohio by this website's creator, Mark Strecker. You can buy it at Amazon or from the History Press.
